Description: Detects the RFC 8439 ChaCha20 initialization constant “expand 32-byte k” which definitively identifies ChaCha20 usage.

Description: Detects the unique concatenated string artifact created during Volume Shadow Copy deletion.

Fidelity: HIGH (this exact string concatenation is unique to this ransomware family)

Detection Context:

  • This anti-debugging loop continuously checks the thread’s stack base address
  • If stack base changes (debugger attached), malware sleeps for 1 second
  • Also serves as sandbox evasion (delays analysis)
  • Recommended Action: Use as correlation signal with other enc/dec indicators

  • Layered detection logic: ChaCha20 constant OR (RSA + VSS + Rust) OR (decryptor strings + Rust)
  • Detects both encryptors and decryptors

Rule 1: Volume Shadow Copy Deletion Detection

Description: Detects execution of VSS deletion commands via vssadmin.exe or wmic.exe.

Fidelity: HIGH (legitimate VSS deletion is rare outside maintenance windows)

Implementation Notes:

  • Deploy to SIEM for real-time alerting on VSS deletion
  • Consider creating exceptions for authorized maintenance windows
  • Alert should trigger immediate investigation

Coverage note (2026-07-06): Rules matching generic file paths or ubiquitous behaviors were removed as false-positive sources; detection relies on the distinctive-artifact rules (extension/hash/mutex/C2-IP) and the companion YARA.


Rule 3: ChaCha20 Cryptographic Activity Detection

Coverage Gap: An earlier version of this section carried a Sigma rule (enc/dec ChaCha20 Cryptographic Operations) intended to flag ChaCha20 key-schedule strings combined with high memory/CPU usage. It has been removed: the fields it relied on (Strings, MemoryAllocation|gt, CPUUsage) do not exist on any Sigma logsource category and cannot be produced by standard Windows telemetry (Sysmon, Security auditing, or ETW), so the rule could never match in a real SIEM. The ChaCha20 constant string (“expand 32-byte k”) this rule targeted is already covered by the YARA rule EncDec_ChaCha20_Constant above, which performs the same string match against on-disk/in-memory file content — the correct mechanism for this indicator. No equivalent Sigma-native replacement is proposed at this time.

Objective: Identify systems communicating with enc/dec distribution/C2 infrastructure.

Fidelity: VERY HIGH (109.230.231.37 is confirmed malicious infrastructure)

  • Check for Xworm RAT C2 traffic patterns (TCP/WebSocket)

Hunt 2: Suspicious Rust Executable Execution

Objective: Identify Rust-compiled executables with ransomware operational parameters.

Fidelity: HIGH when --pass, --file, --folder flags present

Objective: Detect historical VSS deletion activity (may indicate past ransomware execution).
